Students \u2013 domestic and international, undergraduate and graduate \u2013 will share 5-minute presentations about the Maclean\u2019s article and lived experiences as \u201cAsian\u201d and\/or \u201cCanadian,\u201d followed by audience responses.<\/p>\n
3. Video Presentation, \u201cAn Audio-Visual Analysis of W5 \u2018Campus Giveway\u2019\u201d (1980)<\/p>\n
Audience will watch clips of a rebuttal to the CTV W5 show in 1979, in which Chinese Canadians were portrayed as stealing the rightful places of the \u201creal\u201d (white) Canadians in postsecondary education. The show sparked a well-known struggle for equality led by the Chinese Canadian National Council.<\/p>\n
4. Panel Discussion: \u201cAn Open and Responsible Dialogue about Race and Diversity\u201d<\/p>\n
Members of UVic and the Greater Victoria community will give 5-minute presentations on topics such as the history of immigration and racism in B.C., recruitment of international students on Canadian campuses, and diversity and equity issues.<\/p>\n
