Re: FAST, not connex Re: Submitting grades: brain dead FAST: do not submit real numbers

v00# works better when importing xls from connex to fast, and the
build-in function round(), or roundup() or rounddown() based on
preference, in excel or openoffice can work around the problem and
create a new column satisfying fast. of course, it’s better either
connex or fast has such capabilities embedded. hih

Re: We’re number 173!

certainly admins care a lot—that’s why we were asked to see the list
even before it was released 😉 we are back in 200!

also the ups/downs in canada, if that matters:

“now we have made it; next is how to keep it” or more importantly how we
are ranked in engineering/cs/systems/networking

Re: CBC Article about University Teaching

while on their website, happen to see they mean to increase the mil-rate
from 5 to 7.5, or 0.5% to 0.75% of whatever the base is. cheers

btw, are students informed they will be taught by whoever the university
indeed pays to teach them before they apply the university and pay the
tuition? if yes, nothing to complain; otherwise, a possible bbb case?

fair play: universities, profs, and students, or whoever in the society

Re: Membership Communications

typo for dtb a102?

http://www.uvicfa.ca/special-view/meetings/

“UVic Faculty Association reminds members that we will holding an Ordinary
General Meeting on September 15, 2014 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the
David Turpin Building in Room A102.”

hope uvicfa can fix the typo through the mailing list as uvfac-l is
restricted and probably will decline this kind reminder 😉 cheers

Re: Nominations for Associate Dean Research

of course, it’s always possible to have students with even higher
integrity than their supervisor, but this does not mean procedural
safeguards are not necessary. why conflict-of-interest provisions?

ps: btw, no matter how the adr is selected, please revive the graduate
innovation forum (gif) or something alike. nothing more important than
letting students be proud of and talking about their research at uvic

Re: Nominations for Associate Dean Research

having a grad student, whose supervisor clearly indicated the plan for the
2nd term, probably won’t be fair for the incumbent, for the possible
competitors, and even for the student

introducing angela pan

Lin delivered a baby girl (3,478g and 52cm) monday 1:46am at
vgh. both the mom and baby are doing fine now

this time, the process is much faster and more intense—we are also
trying to learn from the experience and do better 😉

thanks a lot to the ee/cs depts and engn colleagues, who helped us
accommodate the unexpected and reschedule teaching

a photo of the baby is available at

now we are also fully balanced and diversified as well. cheers

Re: Update on dealing with budget cut related to

thanks a lot for the coordination and update. also most of our
research funding (even that from nserc) should have indirect cost or
overhead directly sent to or withheld by the university, shared between
the vpr and dean’s offices. we probably can also ask for an allocation
from this reserve to support our technical staff for research purposes.
thanks again
