B.C. Students Awarded $2,000 for Innovation in Digital Media

[Vancouver, May 11, 2011] BCNET is pleased to announce the winners of the 2011 BCNET Digital Media Challenge, a student competition designed to showcase the interaction of digital media with advanced digital infrastructure.

BCNET awarded three student projects with $2,000 in cash prizes at the BCNET higher education technology conference, Unlock the Power of Information Technology, held at SFU Harbour Centre on May 4. The students are from universities across B.C. and represent some of the best and most innovative digital media work that rely on broadband networks.

The 2011 BCNET Digital Media Challenge Competition winners are:

First place: Andrew Au, Simon Fraser University, School of Engineering Science, Veaver, an Interactive Multiview Video System, awarded $1,000.

Second place: Justin Sy, Vivian Chu, Henry Lin, Billy Cheng and Eugene Suyu, Simon Fraser University, School of Interactive Art & Technology, Puppetier, awarded $500.

Third place: Siyuan Xiang, University of Victoria, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Scalable Streaming – Adaptive Scalable Video Streaming over HTTP, awarded $500.

Each of the following finalists received an honorable mention and a $100 cash award:

Honourable mention: Tanjila Farah, Sukhchandan Laily, Nabil Al-Rosuan, Ravinder Paul, Mojtaba Abkenar, Don Xu and Rajvir Gill, Simon Fraser University, Applied Science, Collection and Characterization of BCNET BGP Traffic, awarded $100.

Honourable mention: Caleb Shortt, University of Victoria, Faculty of Engineering – Computer Science, Web-based Security Applications Using Your Own Computer, awarded $100.

The Digital Media Challenge looks for innovative student projects that marry digital media with advanced network infrastructure. The projects are evaluated on five categories: innovation, network utilization, creativity and presentation skills . The competition is open to graduate, undergraduate and diploma students in B.C.
