igl-global book catelogs

Dear colleagues: our library liaison katy circulates to me two catalogs from igi-global (please click the links below to see the electronic copy for easy text search). if you see any books the library should have for teaching and research, please give me a list before july 15 and i will compile into a dept list and forward to the library (again, the library decides which/when/how to buy these books 🙂

also, if you want the library to have any specific books from other publishers, please feel to let me know. thanks

Re: Connex, course web pages access and recruiting

just my few cents: i leave all notes and handouts on a public website (also as a service to the community), and keep all student communication and class-specific things (e.g., grades) on connex, with links to the public one, so students still have a one-stop shop (i believe connex can also do automatic html embedding or reverse proxy to get the public pages “integrated” with connex’s look&feel). if we can get our educational resources reach more people (outreach, recruiting, etc), why not?

this year, uvic undergraduate students have dominated the winner’s list. hopefully next year we will see more uvic participants (particularly our graduate students) and winners. when you are working on a project, group or individual, for courses, co-op or thesis, if it has an application over broadband networks, think competition, think (cash) awards

“Presentation Schedule, Wednesday, April 29

1. 9:45: Session starts at 9:45 am

2. 9:45 – 9:55 am: Donald Acton, UBC CS Professor and Chair of the Broadband Challenge will provide the opening and introduce the competition.

3. 9:55 – 10:00 am: NetTube Presentation (Xu Cheng, SFU)

4. 10:00 – 10:05am : CubeScape Presentation (Neal Clark, UVic)

5. 10:07 – 10:12am: 3AD Framework Presentation (Anthony Theocharis, UVic)

csc466/586b (p2p&advnet) project presentation

napster, gnutella, kazaa, bittorrent, skype, pplive, … if any of these names sound familiar to you, you probably have already known and/or even used peer-to-peer networking technologies a lot!

wifi, bluetooth, software radio, online music/video/game/messaging/social, … if any of these terms sound familiar to you, you probably have already seen and/or experienced the new communication technologies and disruptive applications that have driven the advancement of computer communications and networks a lot in the last few years!

like to know what’s going on underneath and what’s next? come to see the course project presentations of csc466/586b (p2p and overlay networking; advanced computer networks), where you can find a group of hard working uvic students who have been building the next “big” thing throughout this term (some of these projects are shortlisted in this year’s or targeting on the next year’s bcnet broadband innovation challenge contest!)

attached below please find the time/location of the presentations

ps: it’s open to the public and free (including cookies/drinks 😉 and your feedback on the projects and presentations is very appreciated

Re: Security Bulletin: Adobe Reader and Acrobat PDF software

for those who need to open many pdf files on a daily basis (paper review, academic purposes, administrative matters, etc) and cannot wait for two weeks for the adobe patch, there are two simple workarounds:

+ turn off the javascript (or whatever adobe call it) capability enabled by default in adobe software

+ or use a javascript-incapable, open source software such as xpdf

welcome to the new world of von neumann architecture, where data and code are treated the same in binary format over the network 😉

Re: for your amusement

sorry, but i cannot agree to your opinion. i think we/uvic have at least two things to do (in addition to establishing the fact that whether nate has a doctoral degree—done and academic appointment from/at uvic)

+ educate our students that claiming or trying to claim something does not belong to us is a really bad thing, and one cannot get away from the truth forever. academic integrity is the lifeline of a university/person

+ undo the damage by this false claim (at least on the doctoral degree). http://www.wurldtech.com/corporate/management_team.php now has a new bio, but everything is still there other than this page, e.g.,

http://209.85.173.132/search?q=cache:jNc0C_CmJnsJ:www.wurldtech.com/corporate/management_team.php

and his new bio is even more alarming: “As the creator of the Achilles testing technology and Certification program, Kubes research efforts have been heavily funded by Canadian, American, and International Government agencies.” we are yet to know how much the false uvic degree and possibly academic position gave him or his company personal and financial advantage especially from canandian governments where we get funding from as well! if we found out the fraud and do not act properly, we will become liable (i am not a lawyer, but as a principle, if someone abused my name, i will fight to the maximum allowed by law). the same thing for uvic’s reputation

nate is a popular guy, and i believe he’s smart as well. if you google “nate kube”, you can see more than 1,000 entries, so the damage of the false degree and potentially the false position is far reaching (if he really had a doctoral degree from uvic, i think we should nominate him for the outstanding uvic alumni award 😉

only these two things can ensure such things will not happen again (it is already astonishing that this thing could ever happen to uvic), otherwise, we give every one of our students an excuse to abuse, at least once

since your opinion will potentially affect all engineering faculty and the way we supervise our students, i am copying to to the engineering faculty mailing list as well. i think we need a wider discussion. thanks

for your amusement

someone claims to hold a uvic doctoral degree and used to be a uvic assistant professor (?) without having a phd thesis at uvic yet

http://www.wurldtech.com/corporate/management_team.php

“Dr. Nate Kube

Dr. Kube also worked as a technical advisor with the Group for Advanced Information Technology (GAIT) at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, where he designed a number of security technologies for the Industrial Automation industry. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees in computer science from the University of Victoria.”
